Gluten-Free: Homebound ...

I am recovering from a concussion. There is no great story to tell, I simply slipped on ice and landed on the back of my head. Luckily, all I have is a concussion, but there are some lingering effects that have limited my daily life. One, as you can tell by the lack of posts, is the adjustment to reading and light, which are imperative to working with a screen and keyboard. Another limitation is balance, which has kept me close to home.

I can live without working on the computer and was forced into taking a doctor ordered medical leave from work, but my kids and I had to eat. There was no way to go to the grocery store, my husband was out of town and if I sent the kids, we would exist on candy and ice cream. In fact, we did for the first day and it did make me feel better but what was I going to do when the pints ran out?

The answer to my dilemma was to order from my favorite on-line grocer, Fresh Direct. For over 10 years, I have counted on them for everything from fresh produce to prepared meals to laundry detergent to fish and now, to specialties from the dedicated gluten-free grocery. Although I couldn’t personally use my laptop, my son entered my password and went on a shopping spree.

It was fantastic. The next morning an entire week’s worth of fresh food arrived at our door. There were all types of fruits and vegetables, juices and milk, roast chicken and rib eye steaks ready for the oven, prepared gluten-free soups to pop in the microwave and assorted snacks for us all.

My usual positive experience with on-line shopping at Fresh Direct had added bonuses this time. It gave my kids the opportunity to take care of their mom and I did not have to worry that they had good food to eat.

I just am getting back to feeling like a person and will try to get to my book club tonight. Luckily, I read the book before hitting my head but I have not been venturing far from home. I do know that, if I go out, there is fresh and yummy food for my kids and husband to eat for dinner that arrived at my door this morning.
