Dunkin Donuts To Offer ...

I am glad that gluten free options are becoming more readily available.  It makes my life a lot easier to be able to go out with my friends and have menu choices and there are times I would love to have something sweet with a cup of coffee.  But I ask, is a gluten free Dunkin Donut the answer to my prayers?

Pretty but Poison

Even before I was diagnosed with Celiac, I tried hard to avoid donuts.  They have no nutritional value and are high in calories and fat.  Take a look at the published nutrition information for a Dunkin Donuts Original Glazed Donut:

Sodium 330 mg
Total Fat 14 g Potassium 0 mg
Saturated 6 g Total Carbs 31 g
Polyunsaturated 0 g Dietary Fiber 1 g
Monounsaturated 0 g Sugars 12 g
Trans 0 g Protein 3 g
Cholesterol 0 mg

I am the last one to be preaching no fats or sugar, since I have been eating chips and chocolates for the last two days, but I don’t think the answer to my gluten free snack choices needs to be donuts.  Will a donut be my only option to go with a cup of Joe while on the road?

There are frozen gluten free donuts available in certain groceries and I found one bite to be more than I ever need to taste. You can find my donut review on the website.  Maybe Dunkin Donuts will manage to make a tasty gluten free donut, but I have my doubts.  It will be hard to achieve without gluten.  But even if it is “fine” will it be worth the calories and fat?

I ask Dunkin Donuts and their competitors to continue to explore products to serve us gluten free people and understand that they have to satisfy their demographic but also keep in mind those of us who would like a healthy choice.  At the very least, gluten free options are on these companies agendas.
