Take Control

Can't Fight Mother Nature

I am one of the lucky ones in NYC who has fared the devastation of Hurricane Sandy with no problems.  Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for the millions of people up and down the east coast.  My house is filled with friends who are without electricity and water and I am so happy to offer an oasis from their problems.

We have no control over nature, but we do have control of our health.  I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for those of you who are dealing with the cleanup and trying to get your life back on track.  But, I beg you to stick with your gluten-free diet.

Please don’t use the storm as an excuse to eat gluten.  I know that for me, donuts and pizza were the answer to stressful situations but the last thing you need is to make yourself sick.  You need to be functioning at your optimum.

Remember how sick you were before your diagnosis and how good you feel now.  It won’t be easy to maintain a gluten-free diet and you certainly don’t need another challenge but it will be worth the effort.  You can eat all proteins, fruits and vegetables.  If fresh food is hard to find, canned beans, rice, and canned tuna are readily available and only require a can opener; no electricity is necessary.

At this time, you have little control over your situation and complying with a gluten-free diet is the one thing you can control.
