MINDFULNESS is defined as paying attention on purpose in the present moment. What better word can explain what we celiac and gluten-intolerant people need to adhere to daily? It is comforting to have confirmation from the National Institute of Health that what we practice is an answer to good health, Mindfulness Matters – NIH News in Health, January 2012,newsinhealth.nih.gov.

An NIH study found a direct link between mindfulness mediation and measurable changes in brain regions involved in memory, learning and emotion.  The results of these changes suggest that mindfulness practices may help people manage stress, cope better with illness and reduce anxiety and depression.  In short, give us a greater enthusiasm for life.

Living The Moment

I believe that my attention to living a gluten-free lifestyle is my way of practicing mindfulness.  It is indisputable that I am healthier in both mind and body when I take the time to be aware pay attention to my thoughts and actions.  Each time I put something in my mouth, I know that I am honoring my health that, without a doubt leaves me with a positive outlook on life.

But the problem for us busy people is how to find the time to practice mindfulness.  It is not part of our culture and we our challenge will be create ways of reminding ourselves to be mindful.

I think what I can do is send out a daily reminder to breath and shut off the noise so we can take the time to live in the moment.  Selfishly, even if you overlook my prompt, I will be remembering to breathe and be grateful.
