Celiac Disease Screening

First Salivary Screening of Celiac Disease in Italian Primary Schoolchildren:

In a study released by the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition, January 2011, doctors concluded that it is possible to perform a powerful, simple, well-accepted, and sensitive Celiac Disease screening using saliva.

The objective was to evaluate a new, noninvasive disease screening strategy to identify celiac disease in 6 to 8 year old children.  Having a timely diagnosis would help the subjects achieve their growth potential and prevent celiac disease complications by starting a gluten-free diet.

Over 4000 saliva samples were taken, and those children confirmed positive by serum assays underwent endoscopy with biopsies.  Thirty-two children were found to be salivary positive and twenty-nine had subsequent biopsies.  Twenty-eight children showed villous atrophy from the intestinal biopsy, and 1 had lesions in the small intestine. All thirty-two children were suggested to start a gluten-free diet.
