Walnuts are Top Nut

Walnuts Are Top Nut for Heart-Healthy Antioxidants:

At the 241st National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society on March 27, 2011, a new study revealed that walnuts have a combination of more healthful antioxidants than any other nut.

Dr. Joe Vinson, Ph.D., who led the study, noted that nuts in general have an unusual combination of nutritional benefits and are among Mother Nature’s most nearly perfect packaged foods.  “A handful of walnuts contain almost twice as much antioxidants as an equivalent amount of any other commonly consumed nut.  But unfortunately, people don’t eat a lot of them.  This study suggests that consumers should eat more walnuts as part of a healthy diet.”

This study is the first time that scientists compared both the amount and quality of antioxidants found in different nuts.  Dr. Vinson analyzed the antioxidants in nine different types of nuts. Walnuts had the highest levels.

Nuts contain high–quality protein, vitamins and minerals, dietary fiber and are dairy and gluten-free.  There is scientific research linking the eating of small amounts of nuts on a regular basis decreases the risk of heart disease, certain kinds of cancer, gallstones, Type 2 diabetes and other health problems.

And Dr. Vinson states, “it takes only about 7 walnuts a day to get the potential health benefits available from nuts.”
