Coffee Health Percs

A cup of Joe a day keeps the dr. away?

Drinking that second cup of coffee might just be what the doctor ordered. With over 19,000 studies looking for the health impact of drinking coffee,  we now know that coffee is rich in disease fighting antioxidants which become more potent after roasting. Research over the past two years has shown that coffee drinkers are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

The Archives of Internal Medicine which reported that people who drink 3-4 cups of coffee a day are 25% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes.  It is believed that the high amounts of antioxidants and minerals, such as magnesium and chromium naturally found in coffee, help the body use the hormone insulin which regulates the body’s blood sugar.

Studies have shown that coffee drinkers can reduce their risk of Parkinson’s disease by 80%, colon cancer by 25% and have lower rates of strokes.  We also know that caffeine is widely known to help ease head pain and is often included in migraine medication.

For me, I never miss having a cup of coffee before going to the gym.  A study at the University of Georgia in Athens found that 2 cups of coffee cut exercise-induced muscle pain in half and that the harder the women exercised, the more effective was the caffeine at relieving their muscle pain.  Now, not only am I alert, but I have no excuse not to push myself to do a longer and more challenging workout.

So enjoy your coffee, but remember, everything in moderation.
